STANDARDS AND LIMITS OF NORMALITY
Object: site specific installation In the park of the psychiatric hospital in Prague, Czech Republic, is an old wall and in the middle of this wall is a passageway. At regular intervals the wall is divided into areas; it has noses and niches, always varying slightly. The longer part of the wall is being measured and covered with a tailored coating of light blue truck awning. The material is washable and reminiscent of the covers of rubber foam mats. The cover responds to the individuality of the wall, but simultaneously develops a system that fits all areas of the wall into a pattern. One part of the wall on the other side of the passageway is not covered and still shows its individual details. To what extent are peculiarities of the individual accepted and perceived as conforming to the norm? Where are the borders of normality, or of what we define as such? |
